TNO Defense Research is part of TNO, The Netherlands organisation for Applied Scientific research, an independent contract research for government an industry. TNO Defense Research has very strong links with the Netherlands ministry of defense and its primary mission is to support the MOD and the armed services with applied research and technological developments and consultancy. TNO Defense research participates actively in NATO defense research and maintains extensive contacts with NATO countries. In addition it works for other government institutions and for national and international industries. It participates in technology and project development for military and selected civil applications. TNO Defense research employs a staff of about 900. There are three institutes, which cover a broad field of research:

1. TNO Physics and Electronics Laboratory (TNO-FEL)
   Operational research and business management Command & Control and simulation Telecommunications and defence electronics Observation systems.
   
   
2. TNO Prins Maurits Laboratory (TNO-PML)
   Toxic substances, Munition technology (e.g. rocket technology) and explosion safety, Weapon technology and weapon effectiveness.
   
   
3. TNO Human Factors Research Institute (TNO-TM)
